September 2010 - In the wake of difficulties in disposing plastic products after use, and to foster a green environment in conjunction to the proper disposal of plastics, Behn Meyer Polymers Manufacturing have developed an environmentally friendly masterbatch of name Eco-Degradant PD04 that is produced locally for use in Polyolefin packaging films.
The masterbatch, Eco-Degradant PD04 is essentially incorporated with P-Life degradable additive and while in use in Polyolefin packaging films, it is termed as P-Life degradable plastics, and the eco-friendly plastics start to degrade once they are disposed of in the natural environment (sunlight, heat and oxygen) after completion of their lifetime as plastic products. As a result, “oxo-degradation” takes place and the oxidative reaction leads to chain scission of polyolefin polymers and hence produces low molecular mass of oxidative products.
The low molecular mass oxidative products will further undergo “biodegradation” where they are assimilated gradually in soil or bio-active composting environment. In the presence of living organism, they are transformed into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O) and biomass as a result of its metabolism and respiration.
This green programme as a whole brings about technical cooperation between Behn Meyer Polymers Manufacturing and Pacific Enterprise Japan Ltd. from whom P-Life degradable additive is used as the active ingredient in the production of the masterbatch. A dosage of not more than 3.0% of masterbatch in Polyolefin packaging films will impart a two-phase degradation i.e.oxo-degradation and biodegradation on the end product for disposal purposes. As such the Eco-degradant PD04 is indeed found useful in proper disposal of Polyolefin packaging films in particular.
