16 April 2010 - A group of BM executives from the Paper & Board (PB) Division – three each from Behn Meyer International (S) Pte Ltd (BMIS), Singapore and Behn Meyer International Trading Sdn Bhd (BMIT), Malaysia – recently took part in four-day study tour of innovative Indonesian paper mills.
The Singapore team comprised Division Manager Mr William Goh, Product Manager Ms Evelyn Seah and Product Executive Mr Peter Lee. Those from BMIT were sales executives Mr Raymond Lai, Mr Raymond Chong and Mr Tan Kok Teng. The invitations from the mills were extended by the parent organization, Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) group through its representatives in Singapore (Mr Gerard Thin) and Malaysia (Mr Channing Loke) who accompanied the respective BM teams.
The purpose of the exercise, which ran from April 13 – 16, 2010, was an update on the latest environment –friendly product ranges, as well as product enhancement, new paper machines and de-inking plants operated by:
- PT Pabrik Kertas Tjiwi Kimia Tbk. in Mojokerto, Surabaya
- PT Pindo Deli Pulp & Paper Mills in Karawang, Jakarta
- PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk. in Jakarta & Serang, West Java
Progressing from east to west across Java, the tour began in Surabaya on April 13 at the PT Pabrik Kertas Tijwi Kimia Tbk mill where the participants were most interested in the de-inking process plant. They also received more in-depth understanding of recycled paper production.
Tjiwi Kimia is currently in the process of launching their latest range of eco-friendly papers and boards. These products are in line with Behn Meyer’s commitment to “thinking Green” and the group’s steady support for good corporate practices and social responsibility programs. During their tour of Tjiwi Kimia’s adjacent plant, the BM executives were also introduced to the company’s latest woodfree paper-making processes.
Tjiwi Kimia’s product brand is ENOVA and Behn Meyer now carries their latest product line – ENOVA 50% recycled gloss and matt coated papers – which bear the “GreenLabel” logo awarded by The Singapore Environment Council.
The BM team left late afternoon on April 14 for Jakarta, arriving late in the evening.
Their visit to PT Pindo Del Pulp and Paper Mills in Karawang on April 15 began with a short presentation by the mill on their full range of products before touring the company’s two paper manufacturing facilities.
The mill has achieved ISO 14001 and ISO 9002 (now ISO 9001:2000 certification for its activities in Environmental Management and Quality Management systems.
The inspection tour highlighted Pindo Deli’s new range of premium quality packaging board which uses triple-wire during the board-making process. The advantages of this process are that it imparts more bulk and strength … both of which are critical for boards used in the packaging of cosmetics, pharmaceutical and high-end products.
Pindo Deli’s range of paper products include: carbonless paper, uncoated woodfree paper, cast-coated paper, art paper, and high quality tissue for facial handkerchiefs, toilet rolls, household towels and napkins.
At PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk on April 16, a short presentation of the company’s range of products preceded the tour of its various paper manufacturing facilities in Tangerang and Serang (about 60 km west from Jakarta).
Using hi-tech paper machines (METSO, Voith-Sulzer), Indah Kiat’s Seranf plant offers sophisticated industrial paper & board products such as: Ivory paper board (IA) and Triplex paper board (One-side coated/ Two-side coated).
According to the BM visitors, one of the highlights was learning about the mill’s latest anti-fungus soap packaging product, called Sinar IG 280 gsm. They were also impressed with the newly-developed one-side coated board which is suitable for frozen food as well as for microwave usage.
In summing up the experience, BMIT sales executive Mr Tan Kok Teng said it had been an interesting and enlightening visit. All of the BM team members agreed they had gained useful knowledge which would assist in answering questions from clients during their sales trips.
As BMIS product manager Ms Evelyn Seah concluded: “The visit to the de-inking process plant was timely as we have recently launched the ENOVA 50% recycled paper. The knowledge gained should prove most helpful during the selling presentation.”
