5 February 2010 - On behalf of ASA International Marketing, United Soybean Board, and the US Grains Council, 17th Annual Feed Technology and Nutrition Workshop held from 15-19 June, 2009 at the Imperial Hotel in the historical city of Hue in Vietnam.
The theme of this year’s workshop is Feed Safety and Hygiene. In recent years, feed safety and hygiene have become a major concern in the human food chain mainly in view of toxic, microbial, and chemical contamination; these pollutions, whether intentional or accidental, have received severe repercussions from consumers, resulting in the loss of revenues and image for the food, animal feed, and allied industries.
The workshop program was designed to give participants the opportunity to receive updates, participate in deliberations and discussions on the future of the industry, and network with industry experts from the international circuit. It also included plenary presentations, breakout discussions and a poster session from several suppliers, among them: Novus, alltech, Addcon, Kemira, etc..
PT. Behn Meyer Kimia Indonesia took this opportunity to attend the event along with some loyal feed mill customers in the Indonesian Animal Feed Industry, represented by Riza Hairudin (Dept Head) and Ili Kusmidi (Sales Manager), animal nutrition department.
The year's theme was hygiene and feed safety, dealt with many cases of feed contamination, for example mould, bacteria, and mycotoxin. More than 120 participants from 11 countries attended the event. Speakers from the USA, AUSTRALIA, Europe, Singapore and Vietnam among others updated them. Various topics were related to issues, such as HACCP/CGMP programs in feed manufacturing, raw material handling, feed processing and traceability, microbiological and toxic contamination of feed ingredients, implications of feed safety and hygiene on human health.
John Ratclif, Food and Agriculture Consultancy Services, UK, outlined the HACCP control of in-feed medication, and specified additives in animal feed: due to concern about antibiotic resistance, this issue is facing greater public concern in some parts of the world. Dr. Li li, Technical Manager Kemira Asia Pacific Pte LTd Singapore, explained to the audience that contaminants in drinking water can leave residues in animal products, i.e. meat, milk and eggs, which adversely affect product sales, and transfer health risks to humans. To solve the above-mentioned problems, a number of solutions, comprised of filtration, chlorination and acidification, have been developed to improve farm water quality.
Mr. Suharja Wanasuria, a nutritionist from PT. Wonokoyo Jaya Kusuma, mentioned the positive feedback during the workshop: he said, “the event was very useful for people who are working in the field of formulation, nutrition, Quality Control, and production feed mill.”
“By Understanding what is occurring at the feed hygiene level, we can tailor our programs to ensure the best possible outcome for our animal”, said Riza Hairudin.
During the workshops, two half-day field trips were organized to visit historical tombs, one around Hue, citadel, Tu Duc, and the other to Khai Dinh Royal Tombs city.
Last day of the seminar, the date 19 June 2009, the Behn Meyer Kimia and their customers were leaving for Ho Chi Min City (HCMC), to stay one night and then continue the return trip to Jakarta.
