SUBANG JAYA, 9 June 2009 - Behn Meyer Foodtech Sdn Bhd (BMFT) together with its principal, Natraceutical Group Asia Pacific, hosted a technical seminar for customers from the Malaysian food industry at a Subang Jaya hotel on 9 June, 2009.
The one-day program highlighted pertinent products from the Natraceutical range: these included: cocoa antioxidants – CocoanOX range, soluble fibres – Viscofiber, phytonutrients from pigments, selenium yeast, super-fruits, overseal natural colours and talin intensive sweetener.
Mr Oliver Meyer, Director of Behn Meyer who opened the event with a warm welcome to all participants, said: “This seminar offers business opportunities arising from consumer trends, as well as marketing potential for nutritional health food and dietary supplements.”
Natraceutical Asia Pacific Managing Director, Mr Oliver Breit, in his introductory presentation, pointed out that consumers are looking to improve their food and diets to benefit their health. “We are faced with an ageing world population that is sleeping less, eating worse and experiencing more chronic health problems. For the food industry, this means creating more nutritional and functional food,” explained Mr Breit.
“Our mission is to provide our customers with innovative, cost effective and natural solutions for food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products which effectively improve the consumers’ quality of life,” he added.
Supporting Mr Breit’s introduction, Natraceutical Group’s Business Development Executive Ms Preeyarint Kunaruangroj presented global and local demographics with health care trends, in addition to market opportunities for wellness products targeted at different consumer groups.
Product Manager Ms Beatriz Manaz championed the need to “Bring functional ingredients to markets in a competitive environment”. Citing Viscofiber as the highest quality, most effective beta-glucan commercially available in today’s market, Ms Manaz listed its multiple benefits as reducing cholesterol for heart health, improving blood sugar and also weight management – the latter by some 3 kg in 16 weeks.
Ms Manaz added that the product’s main benefit is its high viscosity and high concentration (9 times more than oat bran), which translates to cost efficiency, as less Viscofiber is needed than competitive products, as the daily dosage of beta glucan recommended by the FDA is only 3 grams.
Among other effective products introduced was a range of natural cocoa derivatives with an elevated content of scientifically proven bio-available polyphenols (proportionally high in monomers and dimmers) and high in vitro antioxidant capacity. One of these products: CocoanOX 45%, has the highest antioxidant capacity compared with other fruits and extracts.
The benefits of using Overseal naturally derived colours as ingredients (as opposed to additives), in developing healthier nutrition products were stressed by Business Development Manager, Dr Thanyaporn Siriwoharn, whose presentation won an enthusiastic response from the participants.
Ms Manaz also introduced Talin – a versatile natural protein with a wide range of applications in pharmaceutical supplements, food and beverages. “Talin’s main ability is to mask bitterness, to sweeten and enhance flavour. It is 3,250 times sweeter than sugar, completely stable under heat treatment, and is suitable for Diabetics,” noted Dr Thanyaporn.
Other highlights of the event included: a quiz session and a sample tasting session, where Food Technologist, Ms Jameiah, explained the products’ features and application to the participants.
According to BMFT Sales Executive, Ms Angela Sim, the participants were keen to utilize the technical knowledge provided: “they applauded BMFT and Natraceutical personnel for introducing them to the products’ goodness, and market trends to be applied in their future product development,” she added.
