Enzymes play an important role in modern farming systems. They increase the digestibility of nutrients, which leads to greater production efficiency and opens reformulation potential for animal feeds. At the same time, they can reduce the environmental impact of animal production.
The use of phytase in animal feeds has been long established. Today, phytase replaces inorganic phosphorous sources in livestock, as well as in aqua feeds, reducing the excretion of unused phosphorous into the environment. Other common feed enzymes are fibre-degrading activities, so called non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) enzymes such as xylanase, beta-glucanase, cellulase, etc., and endogenous enzymes such as protease, lipase, and amylase.
Behn Meyer Animal Nutrition also focuses on a new class of enzymes which comprise activities specifically designed to hydrolyze antigens from feed and from the environment. These enzyme products have been shown to reduce stress in animals which is the most important predisposing factor for disease.
